Schematic sketch (3D) of a rail drive line with torque-limiting Safeset coupling

Safety couplings for rail vehicles

Torque-limiting Safeset safety couplings have been incorporated into drives for rail vehicles for decades.

The Safeset is positioned in the drive line between traction motor and universal joint shaft. It releases instantly in the case of overload and prevents thereby catastrophic failure, which could endanger people's lives.

Safeset safety couplings are employed in both electrically powered rail cars (EMU) and electric locomotives.

The primary customer benefits from use of a Safeset safety coupling in the driveline:

  • Enhance passenger safety
  • Minimize consequential damage in the event of failure of a drive component
  • Protect all drive components in the event of impermissibly high torque
  • Increase availability of the rail vehicle

Features of Safeset safety couplings:

  • Precisely adjustable release torque
  • Release torque remains constant over time
  • Design matched to each application
over a torque range from 5 to 100 kNm
  • Rapid reactivation after release
  • Backlash-free transmission of power
  • Compact, lightweight design
  • Minimal maintenance required
